Smartboard In The Classroom: What Teachers Can Do With A Smartboard In Teaching

Smartboard is one of the superior tools to be used in the education sector. It can be used to substitute a lot of traditional tools such as a projector and a whiteboard. It has unlimited benefits to offer to users. Smartboard is no doubt a good device that will enhance the learning experience and make the classroom lesson better than before. To make that happen, other than the device being smart, the users also have to know how to use it effectively. Only then, the best outcome will be obtained. Thus, teachers and schools need to know how to use a smartboard in teaching.

How to use smartboard in teaching:

  1. Enhance creative and two-way interactive learning
  2. Operate integration technology
  3. Accommodate different learning styles
  4. Use as a computer’s substitution

Creative and Two-way Interactive Learning

We have been familiar with the concept of, only teachers will stand in front of the class and teach. With a smartboard, creative and interactive two-way learning will be enhanced.

Teachers can customize their teaching materials using their creativity according to the class needs. It will be easier for teachers as they can present the most suitable materials for different lessons and classes. The materials can be made to be very specific and detailed. Furthermore, they can use mind maps and various design elements. Different fonts and images can also be used. This will ease the content creation for teachers.

Next, two-way interactive learning is made possible because the teacher will not be the only person to do a presentation. Students can be assigned to present as well using all kinds of applications provided by the smartboard. The traditional learning method has also asked students to make a presentation, but it was not efficient. Students either have to write their points on the whiteboard before presenting or they will have to prepare beforehand on a large sheet of paper. It is not efficient because there is limited space for students to write on a whiteboard or a paper, and creativity cannot be poured out boundlessly.

Students can be invited to express their ideas by writing or drawing directly on the screen without any space limitation, using the whiteboard feature of the smartboard. Besides, smartboard allows students to have unlimited creative presentation slides. For an impromptu presentation, it will still be neat and attractive because students and teachers can use the built-in powerful presentation software on the smartboard. Furthermore, smartboard can support various common applications such as reading a PDF document and presenting PowerPoint slides.

It is also very interactive because the interactive smartboard allows users to interact with the screen. Students can highlight their important points, add more notes and draw during their presentation. The presentation will not be stiff without any interaction with the contents. With the efficiency it provides, it will motivate both teachers and students to have interactive two-way learning. Both parties will love the idea of presenting.

Integration Technology

Another smart way for teachers to use a smartboard is by utilizing integration technology.  A smartboard has versatile device connectivity. Devices can be connected to the smartboard effortlessly, for instance, a smartphone and a laptop. Not just that, a digital microscope can also be connected. So, in a lab, teachers can now integrate the microscope into the smartboard. Students can view the microscopic objects by where they are sitting without having to take turns to use the microscope directly. This is an amazing collaboration of two tools to enhance the learning process and smoothen the process.

Besides, if teachers want to use any application that is not on a smartboard, they can connect the laptop to the smartboard. For example, when a teacher wants to use the Photoshop application for their learning session, she can connect the laptop to the smartboard and display it on the screen.

Accommodate Different Learning Styles

Since a smartboard has several smart features, it allows teachers to provide different learning styles in the classroom. Traditional teaching methods can still be practiced but with different teaching styles being applied at the same time, it will enhance the learning experience and increase interaction from students. The different learning styles are teachers can use visuals in their classes and also introduce digital learning to the class. Many things can be done with these two new learning styles. Here are several examples.

Teachers can now change from just writing texts using the whiteboard features on the smartboard to also showing visuals from the internet. For instance, in a history class, teachers can show short clips of documentaries to students to attract their focus and to help them understand more while also using the textbook. Both text and visuals being applied in the teaching will boost more motivation from the students.

Visuals are better at attracting attention and giving better comprehension. Another example of using visuals is, in a biology class, teachers can play a recorded video of frog dissection. It will be clearer for all students to view, and teachers can focus on explaining the details. Besides, teachers can add some notes while the video is playing. Teachers put extra emphasis on important parts by zooming in. These are a few examples of using visuals in a classroom.

Next is video conferencing.  With a smartboard, video conferencing can be introduced to the class. Teachers can arrange a collaboration with other excellent teachers from other schools or other states to have a teaching session via video conferencing. Sharing from other teachers will be helpful for students to understand more about a subject.

A collaboration with experienced examiners is also possible. Students will be exposed to tips when answering the examination or the common mistakes students tend to make during examinations. This can be shared via video conferencing. Teaching will not be limited to textbooks and whiteboards anymore. Students get to know more, have more experience and exposure.

Use as A Computer’s Substitution

Another way of using a smartboard in teaching would be using it as a substitute for computers. Before, asking students to bring their computers or laptops would be bothersome. With a smartboard, one screen will be enough for all.

Teachers can have online resources for their teachings. They can access websites for the lesson. Having a device that lets teachers show online references to students will help to expose students to more knowledge. The sharing and lecture session will be more fruitful with the various reliable online sources.

Furthermore, when there is a special project assigned to the students, they can get information by browsing it on a smartboard. A wide range of research can be shown to the students to help them with their projects.

Besides, with a smartboard, teachers can save every file or note they have used or write on the smartboard, just like how a computer would do. Teachers can then choose to share these notes with their students. If needed, these notes or files can be printed too.
